Better Internet

Valemount needs fast and reliable internet. You might be satisfied with the level of Internet you are receiving as a home user, but good internet is vital for business and some industry. With better speed we can attract a broader range of professionals and industry.

As someone who uses the internet on a daily basis for my work as Editor of the Rocky Mountain Goat Newspaper and as a journalist and graphic designer I have an intimate knowledge of how this issue is impacting businesses and entrepreneurs in our valley.

How fast is fast enough?

Internet speed is a moving target, we always want faster and faster speeds, but the upload speeds in Valemount have not improved in 10 years, that is until Monashee Communications began a massive upgrade using provincial grants and their own investment, but the improvements in performance need to continue. It continues to be a choke point for many entrepreneurs and businesses.

Less for more

Currently residents of Valemount pay higher prices for an inferior product. By restricting access to the internet, ISPs (Internet Service Providers) are making more money per customer, while holding us back.

How do we do it?

We need to take the lead lobbying the provincial and federal government to improve it. We need to use our clout with the Columbia Basin Trust to ensure we have great access to the internet. We need to work with TELUS and Monashee Communications to move this file forward. As mayor I would make and keep this as a priority for the village. It's not the village's role to provide internet, but we need to make sure our community has access to this essential service.
